Yemen Celebrates World Biodiversity Day with Effective Event

The National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development and the Reyadah Foundation commemorated World Biodiversity Day on May 22nd with an impactful in-person event titled “Biodiversity in Yemen: A Future Fraught with Risks.”
The event, held at the Rowad Foundation headquarters in the Yemeni capital Sana’a, featured a range of activities to raise awareness about Yemen’s rich biodiversity. It began with a solemn standing in remembrance of Yemeni unity and the national anthem.
In her welcoming remarks, the Executive Director of the Rowad Foundation, Dhikra Al-Jibri, praised the active participation of young researchers and environmental activists in protecting the country’s biodiversity. Al-Jibri affirmed the foundation’s commitment to supporting young social entrepreneurs working to create a positive impact in the community.
Mohammed Al-Yatari, the Executive Director of the National Forum for Environment and Sustainable Development, considered the event’s organization as evidence of the Yemeni youth’s awareness of their environmental responsibility. He sees it as a positive indicator that can be built upon.
The event included a discussion workshop for researchers and specialists in the field of environment and biodiversity, as well as a photographic exhibition showcasing rare species of animals and plants in Yemen. The details of the “Green Entrepreneurship” program, recently launched in partnership between the Forum and the Foundation, were also announced.
The discussion session featured three research papers. The first, presented by Dr. Khaled Al-Hajj from Sana’a University, reviewed archaeological evidence of extinct animal species in Yemen. The second, by Engineer Hajib Al-Hajbi, addressed the significant threats facing biodiversity, primarily population growth and climate change.
Environmental diversity researcher Maram Al-Nabhani presented a series of interventions to protect Yemeni biodiversity, requiring the concerted efforts of government agencies and societal institutions.
Event coordinator Shurooq Abu Ras briefed attendees on the “Green Entrepreneurship” program and the opportunities it offers for innovative Yemeni youth in the fields of environment and green technology.
The event was characterized by significant positive engagement from environmental and climate activists in Yemen. Attendees were able to learn about the rich biodiversity of the Yemeni environment through the photo exhibition and educational games and activities.
The commemoration of World Biodiversity Day in Yemen showcased the country’s commitment to preserving its natural heritage and empowering its youth to create a more sustainable future.
